Week 11/52: Downtime.

I’ve learned the hard way in previous projects that a key component in achieving a goal is having downtime. Proper rest.

Not scheduled in, not with any kind of aim, but just time to rest and recuperate. I have a series of warning signs I look out for, mentally and physically, which usually mean I have over done things a bit.

It is really tempting to just seize every spare second when you are working towards a goal. After all, it starts pretty exciting and you just can’t wait to make some more progress.

But then there’s the inevitable dip in energy levels, the missed evening or two or three…threatening to become a habit formed of weeks of excuses and low motivation.

For me, a warning sign is when I no longer want to get up when my alarm goes off. This is set for about 5.45am, meaning I can be up and ready with a coffee in hand by 6 after a shower. That’s how I like to start. If I start sleeping in its because, quite literally, I’m knackered. Usually this is also because I have not been disciplined with good sleep hygiene the night before. In turn, this is probably because I’ve been distracted by things that seem more interesting online and offer much quicker ‘wins’ and ‘achievements’ than my delayed goal. At that point, it’s a good idea to take a step back and rest properly.

After going to the Lowland Leader course I felt like it was a good time to take a little break. A trip to London for my birthday. I did zero hiking, in fact told my friends to actively avoid it if possible. We headed into the City and browsed bookshops instead. Winner.

By all means be committed, dedicated and focused. Feed the dream! Get out into the mountains and see the summits. But don’t forget, when you return to base, to spend some time resting properly. And that means doing something totally different, preferably in good company. Variety is key in goal setting. You’ll know when you’re ready to hit the trail again because you’ll feel energised. Right now, I’m itching to get back out there.

Next stop: Fort William, Scotland.

  1. So real. Nothing kills my drive more than burning out from not factoring in downtime. And sometimes downtime has different intensities! Sometimes I just need to escape into a bookstore, other times I just need to get lost in a new place. Glad you are building this in!

    1. I like your idea there about the different intensities of relaxing and having a new focus. Very true!
