Recce and Rename…Part Six

Last Sunday, I opted to stay local and scope out some more West Yorkshire Way. I couldn’t really justify the extra spend of heading to the Lakes as I’m on a strict budget for mountain trips, but still felt the urge to get out and explore. I think if the same situation happens again I’ll probably just overspend on the mountains as the conditions were pretty much perfect but I was rewarded in my local scavenging for pieces of the trail puzzle.

It was a day where lots of small pathways came together to create something really special, and I think I now have the perfect start for section 6 dialled. Also, I’ve been thinking a lot about the route name. An emerging theme is historical (as seen by the latest video for Part 5) and I do spend a lot of time reading the history notice boards found dotted here and there on the trail. As West Yorkshire Way has already been taken by Nicholas Parrott in his 1993 book, I’ve decided to respect the original name and call this trail something slightly different, and more accurate. It’s also a bit more personal to me.

So the new title for this long distance walk is: The West Yorkshire Heritage Trail. I shall call it WYHT going forward. The overall idea is that it ties together outstanding historical sites in West Yorkshire across vast time-spans. I will then seek to study that heritage in some detail in the future by means of a lot of research. But for now, let’s just get the route sorted! I’ve got a very good idea for the rest of the route, and am very excited to share it. Stay tuned 🙂
