Getting yourself kitted out for the mountains takes a fair bit of time, and let’s face it, it isn’t cheap. The more of it you do, the more you know what to keep an eye out for and what to avoid which is good.
I managed to get through my summer ML on a very mixed equipment set up, and looking back wish I’d done things a little differently. As I prepare for my Winter ML registration, I’ve decided to research the best kit for my needs, and then go out and buy it. Simple really. Today I bought the above two pairs of gloves. One pair are mitts to keep fingers nice and toasty, the others are for use when I need maximum dexterity while retaining warmth and water resistance. This could be for use navigating or managing a rope for example. I also bought a new synthetic jacket, the Rab Generator, which will add to the overall warmth when I’m stopping to re-pack something, have a quick bite, or shelter for the night.
I tried lots of different things on, and asked advice from most staff members in each store. It really helped to understand the kit more, and although they are paid to sell things, they all without exception advised me against certain products, more expensive than the ones I bought, as they may have been unsuitable for my needs. So don’t be afraid to ask for help in the store, it might save a whole load of trouble when you’re out on the hill and realise what you’ve bought is not exactly what you need!
